Site description

• April 2018 – Seven wildflower beds were constructed as a local community venture following discussions with Flintshire County Council’s Streetscene and Biodiversity Officers. The project was linked to a talk by local resident Steve Williams on the ‘Importance of Bees’ in Hope Community Library.
• August 2018 – The site was awarded “Bee Friendly” status by a scheme run by Friends of the Earth Cymru and the then Welsh Assembly. It was the first site in Flintshire to receive such recognition.
• 11th November 2018 – The Willow wild flower bed was dedicated in memory of those local servicemen who lost their lives in World War One by Rev. Adam Pawley during the annual Remembrance Parade. The event was attended by approximately 400 people.
• 8th November 2019 –A plaque was unveiled at the Willow Playing Field to commemorate the whole site becoming a Centenary Field, having been recognised by Fields in Trust following submission by Hope Community Council, the support of Flintshire County Council and a local campaign which drew on the work of those involved in the creation of the www.Flintshirewarmemorials.com/ website. The recognition gave an additional level of protection to the whole site together with its existing and future biodiversity initiatives.
• Flintshire County Council subsequently joined all seven wildflower beds together to make a longer, single, colourful display of annual wildflowers.

Management regime

This wildflower site is usually managed through one cut and collect a year between August and October. It is essential that cuttings are collected and removed. This reduces fertility and subsequently; the ‘vigour’ of the grasses year on year, which favours the continued establishment of perennial flowering species.

Date last surveyed
